The School of Graduate Studies organized a seminar on postgraduate students’ supervision to retool and equip supervisors with necessary skills and knowledge to effectively guide and support postgraduate students through their research.
The seminar, officially opened by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo was held on Friday 5th May, 2023 at the University Senate Boardroom. The Vice Chancellor gave a detailed account of his journey as a post graduate supervisor thus setting stage for a daylong exercise.
The seminar was steered by the Professors of the University led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Benedict M. Mutua. He took the participants through the entire supervision process, citing global examples and drawing heavily from his rich background in research and supervision.
On his part, Prof. Franklin Wabwoba, gave the participants his personal experiences in a captivating and insightful talk on supervision as a Professor of Information Technology. He particularly emphasized on ethics by supervisors as they performed their pivotal role of ensuring quality postgraduate experiences.
Participants were also taken through reflections from DIES/CREST course for doctoral candidates at African Universities by the course’s alumni who included Prof. Julius Maiyo, Dr. Joshua Abuya and Dr. Patrick Owoche.
In attendance was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (AFD), Prof. Donald Siamba and Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor (ASA) Prof. Julius Maiyo. About 60 participants attended the seminar that was organized by the School of Graduate Studies Board under the leadership of the Dean SGS, Dr. Robert Kati.
In his closing remarks, the VC thanked the facilitators for quality presentations and noted that the University was heading in the right direction.
