ABSTRACT

Education is an essential aspect of life in any community, as it shapes individuals and provides hope for the future. Every child and every community needs to be educated. Secondary education is critical to national development because it offers the training required for economic and social progress. However, secondary school attendance rates in Sub-Saharan Africa remain the lowest in the world. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors influencing boys’ progression in secondary education in Loima Sub-County. The objectives of the study were to investigate the effects of cultural practices on boys’ progression in secondary education, the effect of family economic status on boys’ progression, and the influence of peer pressure on boys’ progression in secondary education in Loima Sub-County. The study was guided by Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory (1977). Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were employed, and a descriptive survey research design was used. The target population consisted of 134 participants, including 6 secondary school principals and 128 teachers from 6 secondary schools. All 6 principals and 128 teachers were included in the study through census sampling. Data was collected using questionnaires. The collected data was analyzed using percentages, frequencies, means, standard deviations, correlations, and linear regressions. The study found that cultural practices influence boys’ progression in secondary education, family economic status affects their transition to higher levels of education, and peer pressure also impacts boys’ progression in secondary education in Loima Sub-County. The study recommended that the government implement appropriate strategies to enhance boys’ progression in secondary education in Loima Sub-County.
